Prescribing, Advanced Practice and Revalidation

Dr Richard Hatchett Independent Healthcare Education Consultant discusses compliance with the NMC Code, how revalidation addresses nurse prescribing and advanced levels of nursing practice and gives an update from the pilot sites at today's conference.

The objectives of Dr Hatchett's session are:

  •  To review the requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) revalidation process
  • To highlight how revalidation links to non-medical prescribing
  • To highlight how revalidation addresses advanced practice

Abstract of Dr Hatchett’s biography

Revalidation was launched by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) in April 2016. Its aim is to enhance public protection in nursing and midwifery by ensuring practitioners undertake a series of activities benchmarked against the Code published in March 2015. If revalidation effects almost 700,000 registrants how can the process be tied to non-medical prescribing which by nature is a high risk activity for adverse events to the public. This presentation addresses the process of revalidation and how it links to both non-medical prescribing and advanced practice.
