Delivering Excellence in Recovery Oriented Services in Mental Health

Chaired by Dr Anthony Sparkes Lecturer University of Bradford, this National CPD certified conference will provide an important update on delivering excellence in recovery oriented services in mental health.

Paul Scates Senior Peer Specialist Campaigner and Ambassador opened the conference with a presentation on 'What service users want from recovery oriented services' and will cover;

  • learning from the lived experience
  • what does recovery mean to you? Ensuring people facing mental health challenges develop their own definition of recovery
  • ensuring every person in services has an outcomes-focused recovery path
  • implementing the recommendations from the Mental Health Taskforce

Paul comments:

"Paul spoke at the NICE Guidance on Person Centred Care and how he is agasp when the person is not present at the CPP
Why can’t I have the same ambitions as somebody without mental health issues
The art of prescribing to me is not writing a prescription pad it’s about getting to know someone
Recovery is about managing
Pharmaceutical treatment needs to be complimented by psychological therapies
Danger of over reliance on the recovery unit
I treat people how I’d like to be treated
In recovery time is precious"

Dr Raj Mohan Consultant Psychiatrist South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust continued the morning with an update on 'Moving the focus to recovery-oriented services'

  • what outcomes does every clinical service need to measure to focus on recovery?
  • what do recovery outcomes mean?
  • how do we mainstream recovery orientated services for everyone
  • examples of excellence in practice

Dr Mohan comments:

"We are facing reform of the Mental Health Act very soon. This is due to the increase in attention
Risk assessments are completely pointless if you do not do anything about it
Dr Mohan spoke about the CHIME model recovery.  There is no mention of medication, this is fine as medication is just one tool for recovery
We did some work around what goes into a care pathway and to reach a gold standard
Not wanting readmission should be the main goal
Dr Mohan spoke of the stages of self medication.  If somebody is completely independent they shouldn’t really be in hospital
Should consider IPS (Individual Placement & Support) in every area
At the RC Psych service users have a voice, but needs to be more done"

Karen Machin Peer Support Team Institute of Mental Health opended the afternoon sessions with an update on 'The role of peer support in Recovery Orientated services' and covered;

  • benefits of a formalised peer support service
  • myths and misconceptions about peer workers
  • creating a peer support team
  • co-production and implementation

Karen comments: "Karen spoke of the many benefits to peer support and referred to the many papers available to view on this
When we go around the country we see loads of myths & misconceptions about peer support
Challenges can be overcome
Peer support is about co-producing a system
Karen made reference to the statements from Cahn 2004 about co-production, it is a challenge"
