NHS England has published a new quality strategy on behalf of the National Quality Board. The strategy sets out plans for the consistent delivery of care over the next decade, outlining a structured approach to making quality the organising principle of NHS-funded care in England.
High quality care is defined by the 3 core domains: safety, effectiveness and experience. The strategy aims to:
- improve health outcomes and healthy life expectancy
- reduce healthcare inequalities
- improve satisfaction with NHS services
It will do this by applying proven approaches, and initially focusing on:
- improving outcomes and reducing unwarranted variation across major conditions and priority groups through implementation of the National Cancer Plan and modern service frameworks
- making sustained improvements in maternity and neonatal services
- strengthening patient safety across all settings
- improving experience of care and restoring trust in NHS services
- reducing inequalities across safety, effectiveness and experience
- monitoring clinical and population health outcomes
