The Impact of Technology and AI on Work-Life Balance

The Cavell Technology & Wellbeing webinar: The Impact of Technology and AI on Work-Life Balance.

This webinar, organized by Cavell and Healthcare Conferences UK, focused on the impact of technology and AI on work-life balance in nursing. Dame Jackie Daniel, a former NHS Chief Executive and proud patron of Cavell, introduced the session and highlighted key findings from a recent survey of 1,300 nursing and midwifery staff, which revealed that nearly half felt technology blurred work-life balance and caused cognitive overload.

AI in Healthcare for Nurses: What helps, what harms and how to take back control

Michelle Vizard, a nurse and AI expert, presented on practical applications of AI in healthcare, highlighting both benefits and challenges. She discussed how AI can save time but also creates cognitive load through notifications and system switching. The presentation covered topics including AI hallucinations, proper prompting techniques, and the importance of verifying AI-generated information.

Michelle emphasized that while AI can save time and support clinical decision-making, it requires supervision and should not replace human judgment. She also discussed how AI tools can help reduce background mental load and support personal organization outside of work.

AI Implementation in Healthcare

Michelle and Dame Jackie provided insights on mapping patient journeys, prioritizing AI solutions, and navigating digital transformation. They emphasized the importance of information governance, safe experimentation with authorized tools, and involving clinical staff in transformation discussions.

Shared Experience

Participants shared experiences with AI tools like Microsoft Copilot, describing positive uses for email tone checking and data visualization. The discussion also touched on the need for proper implementation and governance of AI tools in healthcare settings and using AI tools appropriately to support learning rather than replace critical thinking skills. The discussion highlighted the need for pragmatic approaches to AI adoption in healthcare while ensuring ethical use and proper implementation.

Conclusion

The webinar concluded with agreement on the importance of ongoing education and dialogue about AI's role in healthcare, and recommendations for nurses to start small with AI adoption, stay curious, and reach out to digital teams for guidance on trust-specific tools.
