NHS England has announced GIRFT teams will support the most affected hospitals to eradicate Corridor Care.
Corridor care is a serious patient safety, quality and dignity issue across the NHS. National reports highlight that the use of corridors and other temporary care environments is unacceptable, and NHS England has now confirmed a commitment to the eradication of corridor care, with specialist GIRFT teams providing tailored support to the most affected hospitals and national data collection beginning in 2026.
The GIRFT teams will help indentify how to improve discharge and flow, and better understand data to improve predicting when demand may appear.
The government has also announced 40 new and expanded urgent care sites to ease pressure on A&E departments, reducing waiting times and improving patient flow to tackle corridor care.
"For too long, the normalisation of corridor care has been baked into our NHS – it’s unacceptable, undignified and exactly why this government is shifting the dial for patients and staff. We’re sending in specialist teams of experts to identify the causes in some of the worst offending trusts and swiftly rectify the problems they find."
