The Department of Health and Social Care has published a series of Enabling Working Group Reports to support delivery of the NHS 10 Year Health Plan for England, setting out the changes required to turn the Plan’s long-term vision into practical action across the health and care system.
The reports sit alongside the Government’s ambition to create a health service that is “fit for the future”, with a focus on three major shifts: moving care closer to communities, embedding digital and data-enabled services, and placing greater emphasis on prevention rather than treatment alone.
“The 10 Year Health Plan sets out how we will create a health service that is fit for the future, delivering better outcomes, improving patient experience and supporting the workforce to meet changing demands.”
The enabling reports identify the foundations required to deliver these ambitions, including workforce capability, data and technology, research and innovation, and system leadership. They highlight the need for services to adapt how care is planned, delivered and evaluated, and for professionals to develop the skills needed to support new models of care over the next decade.
The publications also emphasise that successful delivery of the 10 Year Plan will depend on organisational readiness and workforce development, with staff across health and care services supported to implement national priorities in local practice.
The reports were developed as part of a wider engagement programme, drawing on input from NHS staff, system leaders, professional bodies and partners, reflecting a shared responsibility for delivering long-term improvement in health outcomes.
As the NHS begins to move from vision to delivery, these reports provide an important reference point for organisations and professionals seeking to align improvement activity, leadership development and workforce training with national strategy.
