It is widely understood that Advanced Practitioners play an important role in healthcare, including enhancing capacity for service delivery, helping other health and care professionals and improving the overall quality of service. But research has revealed gaps in the consistency of training, responsibilities and governance processes leading to uneven examples of good practice.
After extensive engagement with professionals and the public UK-wide, The Nursing and Midwifery Council has published a transformative set of principles: Principles for Advance Practice.
For the first time, these principles establish what is expected of midwives and registered nurses as they take on more complex, expert roles in advance practice. In an effort to form a wider set of regulatory measures, this forms the foundation for the best possible advanced practice care in the future.
“We’re encouraging professionals, employers and educators to start using the principles now to shape workforce planning, education and day-to-day decisions. By doing so, we can help advanced practice thrive, and most importantly, to help ensure that people receive safer, consistent and person-centred care when they need it most.”
In our upcoming conference Adopting the new NMC Advanced Practice Principles For Nurses and Midwives Practicing at an Advanced Level delegates will be updated on these new principles and supported to adopt them in practice.
Through extended interactive sessions, there will be a focus on applying the principles, leadership, demonstrating competence, effective governance and ensuring safety within scope of practice.
Date: Thursday 4th December 2025 (Virtual)
